CHAPTER THIRTEEN
Andrew ran down the stairs with me in his arms as though I weighed nothing. Mrs. Jenkens and Lilly were waiting in my room and moved toward us as he walked in.
âSheâs bleeding again.â He was out of breath. âHelp her.â
Unseen hands began inspecting my arm as extra sheets were placed on top of the bed to protect the comforter.
âLilly, get Grace. Quickly.â Mrs. Jenkens went into the bathroom for something, but shouted at us, âLay her on the bed, Andrew.â
He lurched forward somewhat awkwardly and laid me on top of the sheet. As he was pulling his arms out from under me, I caught his arm my good hand. âWhat was that?â I had no voice left from screaming, and I wasnât sure if when I spoke if would come out a whisper or another scream.
âAmy.â He was still out of breath, âBut youâre safe now.â His eyes turned toward my bleeding arm, and he tried to pull away again.
I couldnât let him. Not yet anyway. I didnât feel safe. Far from. I grasped his fur tighter. âDonât leave.â I didnât know if I needed him, but I couldnât stop seeing her face staring at me even with my eyes open. My arm started burning, and I gasped.
He appeared startled at my expression of pain and took my hand. âItâs going to be ok.â He looked up at the bathroom, and growled, âHurry, Jenkensâ in that direction.
My arm began to spasm as a wave of fire ran through it again. I was crying because of the pain and held on to him tightly. I didnât know what had happened. I didnât understand. I only knew I didnât want him to go. I could hear Amy laughing like she was enjoying the pain I was in. I couldnât tell if I was actually hearing her or just imagining it.
âIs she making this hurt worse than it should?â I couldnât quite catch my breath to speak through the tears, but I think he understood.
He looked at me sadly. âShe wonât hurt you.â He started to let go of my hand, but hesitated. Mrs. Jenkens was coming out of the bathroom with wet towels, so instead of letting go, he held my hand tighter.
Mrs. Jenkens started catching the blood and washing my hurt arm. âAre you ok?â She was looking at Andrew.
âTend to the girl.â He sounded almost annoyed with her for asking. âIâm fine.â
As I fought not to scream from her touching my cuts, I caught Andrewâs eyes. Even though I was bleeding, he looked like he was the one in pain. It would have been strange holding his paw, but I was so thankful that he hadnât left me that it barely registered.
When Mrs. Jenkens left again for the bathroom. I tried to calm down. It was over. Amy was gone. She was in the house, but she was not here. Andrew was protecting me. I attempted to wash her image from my vision. It didnât work completely, but I felt a little better.
